[킹덤:아신전 리뷰, 감상평] 조선을 죽음으로 뒤 덮게 한 깊은 한풀이

어둠이 드리운 조선의 북방인 매서운 바람이 치닫고 차가운 설원 위에 피어난 복수의 불꽃은 멈출 수 없는 죽음의 행진으로 번져갔다. 고요한 설원 속에 숨겨진 생사초의 비밀과, 복수를 향한 한 여인의 처절한 몸부림을 담아내며 생과 사를 넘나드는 서사를 만들어낸다.

주인공 아신이 사는 곳은 폐사군이다. 이곳은 압록강 4군, 두만강 6진으로 북방민족의 침입을 막기 위한 군사 요충지로 흔히 4군 6진이라고 일컫는다. 이곳을 폐사군이라고 명명하면서 출입을 금한 곳이다. 조선 땅에 여진족이 모여 사는 마을을 '번호부락'이라고 불렀다.

​

고통과 절망 속에서 피어나는 복수심을 짜릿함을 느끼는 좀비물로로 풀어내며 전율을 일으킨다.

'킹덤: 아신전'은 넷플릭스에서 공개한 한국 드라마 "킹덤"의 번외편으로 조선 시대를 배경으로 좀비로 나라가 멸망에 다다른다. 괴생명체를 탄생시킨 '아신'이라 인물의 서사를 다루어 연속극에서 못다한 탄생의 비화를 포함한 주요한 과거를 풀어헤친다.

북방 여진족'의 소녀 아신(전지현 분)이 주인공이다. 어린 시절 부모를 잃고 고통 속에서 자라며 복수를 꿈꾼다. 조선 국경에 위치한 마을에서 발생한 의문의 사건과 조선 왕실의 정치 음모가 휘말린다. 그녀 가족을 잃은 슬픔으로 한을 가지고 앙갚음을 결심한다.

전지현은 준수한 연기력이며 깊은 슬픔과 분노를 완전하게 표출했다고 하기에는 다소 부족했다. 가슴에 응어리로 남은 한국 사람은 이해하는 한을 같이 느낄 수 없었다. 다만 어린 아신을 연기한 김시아는 꽤 괜찮았다.상당히 괜찮아 보였지만 박병은이 연기한 민치록이 극 속에서 비중이 작아서 아쉬웠다.

현실감이 있는 컴퓨터 그래픽 특수 효과, 시대상과 전반적 극의 색깔을 잘 나타낸 무대와 미술은 한국 색깔을 잘 담아내어 돋보인다. 북방 지역의 풍경은 눈이 많이 내리는 황량함과 야생의 위험성과 조화를 잘 이룬어 좀비는 백미로, 긴장감 넘치는 장면으로 섬뜩한 공포를 배가시킨다.

​

주인공 아신을 제외한 조연 배역들의 비중이 너무 작고 서사가 부족하다. 예를 들어, 민치록(박병은 분)이나아신의 어린 시절 친구들과 같은 주변 인물들이 꽤 이야기를 풍성하게 할 잠재력이 있었음에도 불구하고 소모적으로 사용하여 단순한 전개가 아쉽다.

​

역사와 영화의 벌어진 간극으로 괴리감을 느낄 수도 있다. 특정 역사적 사건이나 인물을 기반으로 하기보다는 허구의 요소가 강하게 들어간 만큼 사실에 대하여 오해 또는 착오를 일으킬 수 있는 부분이 몇 곳이 눈에 띄어 역사에 관심이 높은 사람에게 아쉬움을 줄 수도 있다.

전개 또는 얼개가 부실하지는 않지만 너무 짧은 상영 시간으로 인하여 오로지 살해당한 가족과 이웃을 위하여 복수로 조선군을 응징한다는 큰 줄기로 오밀조밀하게 좀비의 포악성과 아신의 파괴에 대한 짜릿함을 표출하지 않고 불필요한 일화가 너무 많아 사건에 대한 충분한 서사가 부족하다.

​

와신상담 복수를 하려면 절체절명 위기에 살아남아야 하는 생존이 핵심이다. 그녀의 삶을 통해 복수를 했지만 채워지지 않은 쓸쓸함과 대가인 잃어버린 인성을 되짚게 한다. 생사초와 좀비를 잘 연결시켜 욕망과 권력을 비판과 매번 그렇지만 가진 자의 욕심으로 희생만 당하는 민초의 비극은 가슴이 아프다.

​

영웅이 나타나 위기에 구하거나 살아남는 것이 전형적 선과 악이 아니라 내막과 복수로 그려낸 점은 좋았다. 훌륭한 수준 높은 특수효과와 겁나 무서운 좀비의 독특한 움직임과 한국 정서에 맞는 서사가 어우러져 사극과 좀비를 결합한 매력이 있다. 좋아하는 사람이라면 새로운 변신을 한 전지현의 모습으로도 만족할 것이다.

​

백성을 구하려고 생사초의 비밀을 밝히려는 이창과 나라를 날려 버리려고 이를 가는 아신의 조우가 전개에 어떤 폭풍우를 몰고 와 흥미진진하게 펼쳐질 연속극 킹덤 시즌 3이기를 기대한다.

[Movie Review: Kingdom: Ashin of the North] The Deep Resentment that Engulfed Joseon in Death

​

In the dark northern region of Joseon, where fierce winds blow and cold snowfields stretch, a flame of vengeance blooms and spreads as an unstoppable march of death. It weaves a narrative of life and death, capturing the desperate struggle of a woman bent on revenge and the secret of life and death hidden in the serene snowfields.

​

The protagonist, Ashin, lives in the abandoned army outposts called "Pyesagun." These are strategic military points along the Yalu River and Tumen River, known as the 4 Guns and 6 Towns, established to prevent invasions from northern tribes. The area is referred to as "Pyesagun," restricting access. Villages where the Jurchens gather on Joseon land are called "Beonhoburak."

​

A thrilling zombie story unfolds, evoking a spine-chilling sensation as it delves into the revenge that blossoms amid pain and despair.

​

"Kingdom: Ashin of the North" is a special episode of the Korean drama "Kingdom," released on Netflix, set in the Joseon era where the kingdom faces destruction by zombies. It delves into the backstory of the character Ashin, who brought about these creatures, revealing significant past events that were left unexplored in the series.

​

The protagonist is a young Jurchen girl named Ashin (played by Jun Ji-hyun). Having lost her parents in childhood, she grows up in pain, harboring dreams of revenge. She gets entangled in mysterious incidents in a village near the Joseon border and political conspiracies within the Joseon royal court. Driven by the grief of losing her family, she resolves to take revenge.

​

Jun Ji-hyun's performance was decent, but her portrayal of deep sorrow and rage was somewhat lacking. Koreans who understand the pain rooted in their hearts might not fully resonate with her expression of "han." However, the young Ashin, played by Kim Si-ah, was quite good. Although she seemed promising, Park Byung-eun’s character, Min Chi-rok, had too little prominence in the narrative, which was disappointing.

​

The computer-generated special effects were realistic, and the stage and art design effectively captured the era and overall tone of the drama, highlighting the Korean aesthetic. The northern region's landscape, with its desolate, snowy vastness and wild danger, combined well with the zombies, enhancing the horror with tense scenes.

​

Aside from the protagonist Ashin, the supporting characters lacked depth and narrative weight. For example, characters like Min Chi-rok (played by Park Byung-eun) and Ashin’s childhood friends could have added richness to the story but were used superficially, leading to a rather straightforward plot.

​

The historical and cinematic gap might cause a sense of dissonance. Since the series leans heavily on fictional elements rather than specific historical events or figures, there are parts that could lead to misunderstandings or misconceptions among history enthusiasts, which might be disappointing.

​

While the plot or structure isn't flimsy, the short runtime prevents a meticulous portrayal of zombie brutality and the thrill of Ashin’s destruction as she avenges her family and neighbors. There are too many unnecessary anecdotes, resulting in an inadequate narrative about the events.

​

To seek revenge, Ashin must survive dire situations, which is the essence of her journey. Despite achieving her vengeance, she is left with unfulfilled loneliness and lost humanity. The connection between the resurrection plant and zombies critiques desire and power. As always, the tragedy of commoners suffering from the greed of the powerful is heartbreaking.

Instead of the typical portrayal of heroes rescuing people or surviving in times of crisis, the drama focuses on the intricate details and revenge. The impressive special effects, terrifying zombie movements, and a narrative resonating with Korean emotions blend well, creating an appealing fusion of historical drama and zombie genre. Fans of the series might enjoy Jun Ji-hyun’s new transformation.

The encounter between Lee Chang, who seeks to reveal the secret of the resurrection plant to save his people, and Ashin, who seeks to destroy the nation, promises to bring a storm to the plot. It sets up an exciting continuation for Kingdom Season 3.
